Core Strength: The Foundation of Your Recovery

alt="A woman sitting on at her desk with lower back pain, a common symptom of sciatica and spinal misalignment."

In the clinic, I often meet neighbours from Gourock and Greenock who are struggling with back pain or slouched posture. Frequently, this is coupled with core muscles that have become a little “quiet.”

Strengthening your core doesn’t mean endless sit-ups; it’s about a natural, functional approach to stabilising your spine. Think of your core as the internal “bracing” for your body – including your abdominals, obliques, lower back, and pelvic floor. When these muscles work together, they provide the perfect foundation for proper posture and natural alignment.

Why Posture and Core Strength Go Hand-in-Hand

At Inverclyde Chiropractic, we know that gentle adjustments help realign the spine and improve mobility. However, to achieve sustainable, long-lasting results, we need to look at how your body supports itself between visits.

A strong core acts like a built-in support system. It provides stability during movement and reduces the likelihood of strain on your spine – whether you’re lifting heavy shopping or sitting at a desk in Port Glasgow. By engaging these muscles, you help maintain your alignment throughout the day, making you feel lighter and more empowered.

Fiona’s Favourite Functional Exercises

When building strength, we always prioritise proper form over intensity. Incorrect alignment during exercise can negate the benefits, so keep your movements gentle and controlled:

  • Planks: A fantastic way to engage the entire core. Hold a straight line from head to heels, keeping your breathing “airy” and your abdominals engaged.
  • Dead Bugs: Lie on your back and slowly lower the opposite arm and leg while keeping your back flat against the floor. This is brilliant for coordination and spinal stability.
  • Glute Bridges: Lie with your feet flat and lift your hips, squeezing your glutes. This supports the lower back and encourages better posture.

Just 10 minutes of focused movement, 3-4 times per week, can make a significant difference to your mobility and comfort.
